Real Madrid defeated Chelsea at the Santiago Bernabéu, giving themselves a very good position in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, which will be decided next Tuesday at Stamford Bridge. Madrid carry a two-goal advantage into the second leg thanks to precise goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio.
The first half of the match had a fast pace from the very beginning and the first chances didn't take long to come. Just two minutes after, Chelsea went on a quick attack, but João Félix's attempt was neutralized by Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Ten minutes later, Karim Benzema broke through in penalty area against defender Thiago Silva, but his left-footed attempt ended up in Kepa's gloves. Real Madrid took the lead in the 22nd minute. Dani Carvajal sent ball behind the visiting defence, where Vinícius Júnior was also involved in the play, but Kepa made a good save. However, Karim Benzema reacted well to open the scoring at 1-0.
Chelsea's chances of a turnaround were significantly reduced in the 59th minute when Ben Chilwell fouled a breakaway Rodrigue just outside the sixteen and received a straight red card for his tackle. Madrid's Marco Asensio took advantage of the extra man in the 74th minute, and about three minutes after his arrival on the game, he was accurately passed by Vinicius and the match was practically decided.
