The nickname clearly documents the club's colours, Roodzwarten, meaning 'red and black'. The Rats nickname is easily understood due to the name of their stadium, which is called Rat Verlegh Stadium and has a capacity of 19,000 seats. The club was founded in 1912 in the city of Breda by the merger of AVENDO and NOAD, which gave rise to the current abbreviation NAC (NOAD ADVENDO Combinatie).
