In a closely contested encounter on July 31, 2010, KVC Westerlo hosted KAA Gent in what was set to be an enthralling soccer match. The game remained evenly matched for a significant portion, with both teams showcasing resilience and tactical discipline, aiming to break the deadlock.
As the second half progressed, at the 70-minute mark, Gent made their first strategic move by introducing A. Custovic into the fray. This substitution seemed to inject fresh energy into the team's lineup. KVC Westerlo responded in kind six minutes later, with J. Ruíz coming on, hoping to tip the scales in favor of the home team.
Gent continued to shuffle their squad with a second substitution in the 76th minute by bringing in S. De Smet. Both teams were evidently looking for that slice of magic, that shift in momentum that could earn them the critical three points.
With little time left on the clock, Westerlo made their second substitution at 88 minutes, introducing S. De Petter into the game. It seemed as if the match was heading towards a stalemate, but drama unfolded in the dying moments.
The decisive moment came in the 89th minute when E. Coulibaly found the back of the net, scoring what would ultimately be the winning goal for Gent. In a game starved of goals, this late strike was enough to seal the victory for the visitors, much to the delight of the traveling supporters.
Despite a final substitution by Gent in the 90th minute, which saw Y. El Ghanassy come on, the damage had been done, and Westerlo was left with little time to mount a comeback.
The match ended with KAA Gent taking all three points, courtesy of Coulibaly's last-minute effort, which highlighted the importance of persistence and capitalizing on opportunities right until the final whistle.
