AFC Bournemouth

They call them The Cherries. Also, their club color is red. But most importantly, the stadium they play in is near the cherry orchards on the Cooper-Dean estate. Interestingly, their red and black striped jerseys are based on the original jerseys of Italian club AC Milan, and have been since 1971. The club also adopted a new logo at that time as a symbol of progress and the start of a new era. This features stripes in the background, the same as on the jerseys, and a silhouette in the foreground symbolising a player with a ball. This is Dickie Bowsett, who played for the club in the 1950s.

They are at home at Dean Court, which is currently under the sponsorship of Vitality Stadium. It has a seating capacity of 11,464. Their traditional rivals are Cambridge United and Plymouth Argyle and both operate in the second highest competition. Indeed, this is also where AFC Bournemouth, who have only recently made their way to the Premier League, have operated for pretty much their entire history.

Founding of the club and first promotion to the Premier League

The club was founded in 1890, then known as Boscombe FC. The current name has only been used since 1972. Undoubtedly the club's greatest achievement is its first ever promotion to the top flight, which it achieved in the 2014/15 season by winning the lower-tier EFL Championship overall. Since the following season in 2015/16, the club has played in the Premier League and remains in the league to this day.

Previous milestones and achievements

If we dig deeper into the history, the 1913/14 season is particularly noteworthy, when the club advanced to the FA Cup for the first time. Sadly, World War I put an end to that bright period. The club wandered back to the former Hampshire League.

Another important milestone in the club's history was the arrival of manager Harry Redknapp. This was in the 1980s and the club were celebrating winning the EFL Trophy at the time. This is played by clubs in the top and second tier of the competition. The club won it against the famous Manchester United.
