The nicknames of this club were The Dons, The Wombles and The Crazy Gang. The club colours are a combination of blue and yellow, which are part of the crest and home jerseys. The club was founded in 1889 in the south-west London borough of Merton. For a long time it played in the lower competitions, but after professionalisation it rose to the highest rungs of English football in 1985 and also managed to win the English Cup, in 1888. They beat then big club Liverpool 1-0.
However, Wimbledon FC was in for a downward ride and was eventually relegated from the Premier League in 2000. It wasn't long before the club folded in 2002, following a move to Milton Keynes. The fans did not accept this and an initiative called The Dons Trust was formed, which led to the formation of AFC Wimbledon, which is considered the current successor to the original club. Among other things, the club adopted the colours of the jersey and the club crest, clearly signing up to the legacy of the original club. AFC Wimbledon now play in League One, the third highest level of English football.
