The history of the Italian club Calcio Catania dates back to 1929, when they managed to play in the top Italian league. Here, their best finish was eighth position, which they achieved several times, most recently in the 2012/2013 season. However, after the following season, the team was relegated to Italy's third league, Serie C, due to a corruption scandal where they were supposed to buy games for keeps.
They currently play their matches at Stadio Angelo Massimino with a capacity of over 23,000 spectators. It is one of the most important football clubs in the south of Italy, having about 600 thousand fans. This makes Calcio Catania even the twelfth most popular team in Italy.
