This football club is nicknamed The Bluebirds. Also their club colour is blue. They play in the English league, however they are a Welsh football club from the city of the same name, Cardiff. However, after relegation from the Premier League, they have been operating in the EFL Championship, the second highest competition, since the 2019/20 season. They are currently at home at Cardiff City Stadium, which currently holds 32,280 people after a capacity expansion in 2014.
As this is a Welsh club playing in the English league, the rivalry between some of the other English clubs here is of a cross-border nature. The home derby is then played with Swansea City, is known as the South Wales Derby and they have played over 100 matches between them.
The club was founded in 1899, then under the name Riverside AFC. It has been under its current name since 1908. The original intention behind the formation of the club was to provide local cricketers from Riverside Cricket Club with some sporting activity during the winter break. In their first season they played friendlies against local clubs on the pitch at the local park, Sophia Garden. This was also where cricket was also played at the time. From 1910 they played at Ninian Park, which was replaced by the current Cardiff City Stadium in 2009.
The club was in England's top competition for the longest time shortly after joining. It was also probably the club's most successful period. In fact, the club's greatest successes came in 1927, when it won the FA Cup and also the FA Charity Shield. It was also a finalist in the FA Cup in 1925 and 2008. It is certainly worth noting that Cardiff City is the only non-English club to ever win the FA Cup.
In terms of local success, it has a string of Welsh Cup wins (22 in total), making it one of the second most successful teams in this competition behind only Wrexham. The club also won the FAW Premier Cup in 2002 from local competitions.
