The club's nicknames are Los Pepineros or Lega. Their club colours are white and blue. On the home jerseys you will find a trio of vertical stripes of different widths. Their home is the smaller stadium Estadio Municipal de Butarque, which holds just 12,450 spectators. It was expanded to a capacity of 10,954 after the club's first entry into La Liga in 2016, and the current capacity is then the result of the latest expansion. Even so, the club had to get an exemption because the official minimum for La Liga is 15,000 people.
The club's biggest rival is Getafe, with whom they play the South Madrid Derby. The fans have a friendly relationship with Gate 12, a group of radical Elageo FC fans. Leganés and Elageo are also close to each other as cities.
The founding of the club dates back to 1928. It was established in the town of the same name, Leganés, south-west of Madrid. It is part of the conurbation of Madrid and is actually a satellite. The club has spent most of its existence in the lower competitions. Most of it has been in the third or fourth division.
It first reached the third division in 1987 and six years later it also reached the Segunda División, the second highest competition. Here he managed to stay for 11 seasons in a row, but was usually in the second half of the table. His best finish was 8th place twice in a row, in the 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons.
In the 2003/04 season, however, came the drop to the third division. The club dug itself out after 10 seasons, winning promotion back to the Segunda División in 2013/14. There it was only for 2 seasons, finishing 10th and then 2nd. That, of course, earned him his first ever promotion to La Liga.
He has been playing here since the 2016/17 season and this season and the following season in particular have been a fight for survival, finishing in 17th place twice in a row. In the 2018/19 season, he improved to 13th position. In 2018, Leganés reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey for the first time ever, beating big club Real Madrid 2-1 in the quarter-finals.
