The full name of the club is Real Club Celta de Vigo, but usually Celta de Vigo or just Celta Vigo is used. The club's nicknames are Célticos, O Celtiña or Celestes (sky blue). The club's colour can be easily identified by this, which is sky blue and appears in combination with white on the jerseys as well as in the emblem. The home stadium is Balaídos, which has a capacity of 29,000 seats.
The main regional rival is Deportivo de La Coruña, with whom the Galician Derby is played, named, of course, after the autonomous territory in north-western Spain where both clubs are located.
The founding of the club dates back to 1923, it was established in the largest city in Galicia, which is Vigo or the City of Olives. In the past, the club has mainly occupied the lower rungs of the table, although it has had periods when it has managed to rise to the top half. However, it has also often dropped down a league. Its best ever finish in the top Spanish league was 4th place. They managed this twice, in the 1947/48 season and then again in the 2002/03 season. They was also in the Copa del Rey Cup final 3 times, the last time being in the 2000/01 season.
The club probably had its best period in the 1990s, especially in the second half of the 1990s. It was then that it regularly reached the European Cups. For a brief period, the club played in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup, now the UEFA Europa League, in the 1998/99, 1999/00 and 2000/01 seasons. It also has one win to its credit, from the 2000 Intertoto Cup.
After a successful season, the club was still relegated to the Segunda División. Since the 2012/13 season, it has been playing La Liga again, where it has again performed fluctuatingly. Its best recent seasons were from 2013/14 to 2015/16. It was in 2015/16 that it rose to 6th position. However, the following years saw a drop in results again.
