They are nicknamed Bhoys, Gaelic for "Boys", or The Celts or The Hoops. They have won Scotland's top league 50 times, which puts them second only to their biggest rivals Rangers. Their home stadium is Celtic Park, which has a seating capacity of 60,411. This makes it the largest stadium in Scotland and the ninth largest in the whole of the United Kingdom. Fans of the club call it Parkhead or Paradise. The club colours are green and white, which is also on the striped jerseys.
The club was founded back in 1887 and is one of three Scottish clubs in Glasgow. From its earliest days, its existence has been strongly associated with and motivated by charitable work. The club's very origins are linked to the Poor Children's Dinner Table charity, when the club sought to raise funds to fight poverty in East Glasgow. The club is still an active charity today and has its own foundation, the Celtic FC Foundation - Football for Good.
The club played its first ever match against its old rival Rangers on 28 May 1888, winning 5-2, but it was a friendly. The club also set a major league record when they beat Dundee 11-0 in 1895. But let us return to the rivalry with Rangers, which has a religious and political background, which is also reflected in the differences between the fans (Celtic Catholics, Rangers Prostestants). In their midfield battles, Celtic were the more successful club in the early decades until 1927:
Gradually, however, the balance shifted to Rangers and Celtic won only three times in the next four decades. It was not until new manager Jock Stein joined the club in 1965 that another successful campaign began. His charisma transformed the club into a hot roller, winning 9 titles in a row from 1966 to 1974.
In recent decades, Celtic and Rangers have often alternated on the throne, but since the creation of the current form of the Scottish Premiership in 2013, they have recorded another run of success in a row, partly due to Rangers' financial problems. To date, the club has a record of 50 top-flight wins, 39 Scottish Cups and 18 Scottish League Cups. From the 1966/67 season they have one win in the current UEFA Champions League, when they beat Dynamo Moscow.
