The club's nicknames are Babazorros or El Glorioso. Their club colours are blue and white, which are both on their emblem and on their home jerseys. The home jerseys use vertical blue and white stripes. They play at the Mendizorrotza stadium, which, after an expansion in 1999, offers 19,840 seats.
The club was founded in 1921 in the Basque city of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Interestingly, it was the first club to break through from the second highest competition, the Segunda División, to La Liga, in the 1929/30 season. However, the club only stayed there for three years and did not enter La Liga for a second time until the 1953/54 season, but again only stayed there for a very short period of two seasons. For the rest of the last century it disappeared from La Liga, even playing in the fourth division in the 1980s.
Improvement came with the 1990s, when they made it back to the Segunda División, in the 1994/95 season. They won the 1997/97 edition and returned to La Liga after 42 years. Although the first season was a struggle to stay up, there were also early successes, such as their first qualification for the UEFA Cup, now the Europa League, when they managed to finish 6th in the table, after two wins against big club Barcelona. Even more success came a year later when they even reached the final, where they suffered a 4-5 defeat to Liverpool. That was in 2001.
The last time the club reached La Liga was from the 2016/17 season and they are currently playing it. However, it has been moving more towards the second half of the table in recent seasons, preferably around the middle of it. In domestic cups, the club has recently done well in the Copa del Rey, specifically in 2017, where the club eventually lost to Barcelona 1-3 in the final.
