The club's name is also commonly abbreviated to EAG or simply Guingamp, with its full name being En Avant de Guingamp. The club colours are red and black, which can be found on both the jerseys and the emblem. They are at home at the Stade de Roudourou, which has a capacity of 19,033 seats. Roughly 2.5 times the population of the municipality where the club is based, which is quite unusual.
The club has a local rivalry with another Breton club, Stade Rennais FC. For example, they beat them 2-1 in the 2009 French Cup final. They also beat them in the final of this cup in 2014, this time 2-0. However, in a match on 12 May 2019, a draw with their rivals cost them participation in the next edition of Ligue 1.
The club was founded in 1912 in Guingagamp, a town of the same name in Brittany. Originally, the club played for a long time in amateur regional leagues, but the first successes came from manager Noël Le Graët, who took over the reins in 1972. In 1976, the club was then promoted to the 3rd division and a season later was promoted to the 2nd division. It remained in the current Ligue 2 until 1993. The club became fully professional in 1984.
The club's main achievement was winning the French Cup twice, where they also beat their main rival twice, as discussed in the introduction. What's interesting about the first trophy in 2009 is that it was only the second team in history that didn't play the top competition, Ligue 1, yet won this cup. The second time then they won in 2014, when the club was already in Ligue 1. In the 2018/19 season, they also reached the final of the French Football Cup. In addition to domestic cups, the club has also celebrated success at European level. It was in 1996 when they won the Intertoto Cup.
The club made several attempts to reach Ligue 1. It was in 1995, then 2000 and most recently in 2013. It is the latest promotion to Ligue 1 that is their longest tenure in the top competition so far. It was ended in 2019 by their rivals Stade Rennais FC, who returned the favour by defeating them in the cups.
