The Tuscany club has a tradition dating back to 1920 and has changed its name several times throughout its history. From the original Empoli FBC it gradually became ASF Empoli, Dopolavoro Empolese to today's Empoli FC. The Azzurri, as the team playing its home games at Stadio Carlo Castellani (capacity of more than 16,000 spectators) is also nicknamed, even played in the UEFA Cup in 2007. However, the vast majority of their time was spent in Italy's third highest competition. They have been more successful in recent seasons, but they are still more of a provincial club in the Italian scale, on the border between Serie A and Serie B.
Club success? Winning Serie B in the 2004/2005 and 2017/2018 seasons, participating in the first round of the 2007/2008 UEFA Cup, which ended in the first round on the hoof of Swiss side Zurich. Luciano Spalletti and Luigi Delneri have led the Tuscan side in the past, while former stars include Antonio Di Natale, Luca Toni, Sebastian Giovinco and Marco Borriello.
