The club is nicknamed Les Girondins, Le club au scapulaire and Les marine et blanc. Their club colours are navy blue and white, which also refers to the latter nickname. They then play their home games at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, which is also known as Matmut Atlantique, for sponsorship reasons. It is a modern stadium that only opened in 2015 and offers a capacity of 42,115 seats.
The club has a particular rivalry with two other teams. The first is with Tolouse FC, whose mutual matches are called Derby de la Garonne. The name is derived from the Garonne River and the two main football clubs in the towns along its course. Another rival is FC Nantes, with whom they play Derby de'Atlantique, named after the proximity of both clubs to the Atlantic Ocean. There is also a strong rivalry with Olympique de Marseille, against whom Bordeaux has not lost a first league home game since 1977.
The club was founded in 1881 in the city of the same name, Bordeaux, and focused on many sports. Football appeared in its repertoire in 1910, but then again only in 1919 after it was abolished. The club played its first league match a year later against Section Burdigalienne and lost by a high margin of 0:12. The club has been a professional team since 1937.
It is one of the more successful football clubs in France. It has a total of six Ligue 1 titles to its credit, most of which date back to the 20th century, but the most recent was in 2009. Otherwise, it has also won the French Cup 4 times, most recently in 2013, as well as the French Cup 3 times, most recently in 2009. In the same year he also won the French Super Cup for the last time, from where he has a total of three trophies.
