The nicknames of this club are Les Grenats and Les Graoullys. Their club colour is dark red. The jerseys also feature white elements, which are also found in the emblem. Outdoors, they play more or less in white jerseys. Their home ground is the Stade Saint-Symphorien, a multi-purpose stadium with a capacity of 25 636 seats.
The club was founded in 1932 in the northeastern French town of Mety in the Grand Est region. It was the merger of two amateur athletics clubs. It is one of the oldest teams in France, which soon took up football professionally. Many other teams were amateur for a long time.
Shortly after the club's formation, it played in Ligue 2, the second highest competition, starting in 1933. Although it spent relatively fewer seasons in Ligue 2 throughout its history, and played most of its seasons in the top competition, Ligue 1, it did not see success in the form of a title. Their best finish was second place, in the 1997/98 season. Their first appearance in the top flight was in 1935. The longest run of participation was from 1967 until 2001, when they were relegated for the first time in many years.
However, they has several cup triumphs. Firstly, FC Metz won the French Cup twice, in the 1983/84 and 1987/88 seasons, and then the French Cup again twice, in the 1985/86 and 1995/96 seasons. Of the international competitions, theyreached the final of the Intertoto Cup in 1999.
In recent years, the club has not fared well in Ligue 1. If we talk about the first two decades of this century, it has had to face relegation several times. The last time they made it to Ligue 1 was in the 2013/14 and then also in 2018/19 seasons.
