Sportverein Austria Salzburg was founded in 1933 and its current era began in 2005 when it was acquired by Red Bull, the largest energy drink manufacturer, which meant the logical renaming to FC Red Bull Salzburg. The arrival of such a strong financial partner has brought about a major performance boost, with Salzburg essentially dominating Austrian football.
In the period under Red Bull, the team has been league champions so far in the seasons 2006-07, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19. In the remaining seasons of this span, they have finished second. Thanks to these successes, the team regularly ventures into the international arena, be it in the Europa League or the Champions League, and even here they put in decent performances.
There is also an interesting fact about Salzburg. Some of the fans of the original club did not accept the beverage giant's control and managed to establish a football team under the original name of SV Austria Salzburg. However, it is a small team playing in lower competitions in a stadium with a capacity of about 1,600 spectators.
