FC Shakhtar Donetsk is the best Ukrainian football club of recent years, having regularly finished first or second in the table over the past quarter of a century. The team from the east of the country is located in a heavily industrial area where many coal mines can also be found. This is reflected in the team name itself as shakhtar translates to miner. This reference was incorporated into the name by several sports clubs during the USSR era.
It is a team that also regularly makes a name for itself on the European stage. The greatest achievement in this regard is undoubtedly the triumph in the UEFA Europa League in the 2008/2009 season.
The club's success is also undoubtedly due to its financial strength, as its owner is the richest Ukrainian Rinat Akhmetov. The club's home stadium was the modern Donbas Arena, where the EURO was also played. However, this stadium was damaged by artillery fire in 2014 in the fighting that rocked the eastern part of the country. So, for security and political reasons, it was moved and the team played its home games first in Lviv and later in Kharkiv.
