FK Zenit St Petersburg, more commonly known as Zenit St Petersburg, was founded in 1925, although some sources also cite 1914. Today, it is a strong Russian club with great financial potential, which has allowed it to make a name for itself at international level. Indeed, Tyne is owned by one of the world's largest oil and gas producers, Gazprom, which is based in the same city.
During the Soviet era, St. Petersburg managed to win one league title. This subsequent period has been considerably more successful, as they have won Russia's top league five times so far, with some second and third place finishes to boot. Alongside this, they are also multiple winners of cup trophies from the domestic scene, both from the present day and from the days of the USSR.
Of their international successes, they should definitely be mentioned for their triumph in the 2007/2008 Europa League, as well as their subsequent victory in the European Super Cup, where they beat then Champions League winners Manchester United. Given their recent domestic successes, it is perhaps also unsurprising that they are a regular participant in European competitions, be it the Europa League or the most prestigious Champions League.
