The nickname for them is Flingeraner. The club colours are red and white. At home they play at the Merkur Spielarena stadium, formerly known as the ESPRIT arena. The capacity of the stadium is 54,600 spectators for football matches. Otherwise, concerts are also held there, it is a multifunctional hall.
The club shares its biggest rivalry with FC Cologne. It is a long-standing rivalry between the two cities in which the clubs are based. In recent seasons, however, the teams have met very rarely. Their last match is from the 2013/14 season, when both were operating in the second league. Their mutual matches are referred to as Rheinland derbies. Other rivalries here are with clubs Rot-Weiss Essen, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, and Wuppertaler SV.
The origins of the club date back to 1895 in the city of Düsseldorf in North Rhine-Westphalia. The original name was TV Flingern 1895, later it also merged with another club and has had its current name since 1919. It is a sports club which, in addition to football, also runs athletics, triathlon, handball and other clubs.
The club's first season in the Bundesliga was 1966/67 and then its last promotion was in the 2018/19 season. The club has travelled a lot between divisions and is not a regular participant in the Bundesliga. It does have one title from Germany's top league, but that dates back to 1933, long before the format of the league as we know it today, i.e. before the Bundesliga was formed. The club also has the DFB-Pokal Cup to its credit, winning it twice in the late 1970s.
