The club nicknames are Gironistes and Blanquivermells (white and red). Also because the club colours are of course white and red. These colours are represented on the home jerseys by unusual diagonal stripes. This motif is also found in the club crest. The club plays at the Estadi Montilivi, which has a capacity of 14 450 seats. Due to their first participation in La Liga, the stadium was expanded to this capacity in 2017. The required capacity for Spain's top league is at least 15,000 people, so the stadium still has a slight capacity deficit.
The club was founded in 1930 in Girona, Catalonia. Specifically, it happened in the Norat café in La Rambla of Girona. It was actually created after the closure of Unió Esportiva Girona, for economic reasons. The new club entered the second division and played its first match against Colònia Artigas.
For most of its long history, the club has been between the second and third divisions. It was only in the 2008/09 season that it began its journey in the Segunda División, the second highest league. Here it has remained for 9 seasons in a row and in 2016/17 secured promotion to the top Spanish league with its second position. In their first ever season in 2017/18, they finished in a respectable 10th place. A year later, however, they finished in 18th relegation position. La Liga has thus proved to be beyond him for the time being.
For the club, however, historical improvements are of course evident. The new training centres that the club has been building since the end of 2017 may also contribute to further improvements. Covering an area of 20,000 square metres, the PGA Catalunya Golf Course here features both outdoor natural grass pitches and indoor training facilities. So it remains to be seen whether the club can work on further progress and whether it will soon rise from the second tier back to the Spanish football elite.
