The club is nicknamed Hamilton Accies, or Accies for short, and is the only active club in the United Kingdom to have its origins in school football. It currently plays at New Douglas Park Stadium, which has a capacity of 6,018 and an artificial surface. The club colours are red and white.
The club was formed in Hamilton from the aforementioned school team at Hamilton Academy in 1874. It has won the Scottish Challenge Cup in two consecutive seasons:
He has finished runner-up in the Scottish Cup on 2 occasions, in the 2005/06 and 2011/12 seasons. Otherwise, the club has had several victories in lower competitions, in the First Second and Third Divisions.
As can be seen from the club's achievements, the club has been through several Scottish divisions during its existence. In the 1970s, it withdrew from the league due to debt. While the club now plays at the aforementioned New Douglas Park, it originally played at Douglas Park Stadium, the land of which was sold in 1994 to build a new sanctuary. For seven years it then shared a stadium in Coatbridge and Glasgow. During that time the club also had problems paying the players, which eventually forced a strike. This saw Hamilton Academical relegated to the Third Division and it wasn't until 2001 that they looked at a new stadium.
The club then looked to the top flight after 20 long years in 2008. However, in the 2010/11 season they were relegated again. Despite their relegation, the club were recognised for their approach to fielding young players, some of whom later went on to make their mark at international level. The club returned to the current Scottish Premiership in the 2013/14 season.
