I Gialloblu (yellow and blue), I Mastini and Gli Scaligeri are the club's nicknames. You can also tell that they play in blue and yellow. The club's stadium is Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi with a capacity of 39,211 seats.
The club plays its city derby against Chievo Verona, which is called the Derby della Scala. However, it has been some time since the clubs have met each other. It was in the 2001/02 season when they both played Serie A. Hellas won the first match between them back then, 3-2. Chievo, on the other hand, scored in the return leg with a 2-1 win.
The club is based in the city of Verona in northern Italy. It was founded in 1903 as Associazione Calcio Hellas. If you are intrigued by the Greek name for the Italian club, it is because it was founded by students from the Scipione Maffei college, who named it after a design by a professor of Greek origin. In 1916, the club began to focus on football, and so was given the new name Football Club Hellas Verona.
They broke into Serie A for the first time in the 1957/58 season, but only lasted a year there then. They dominated the competition in the 1984/85 season, and it was their first and last ever win in the top league competition. As far as domestic cup success is concerned, they have reached the final of the Italian Cup three times so far, in 1973, 1983 and 1984.
Their tenure in professional Italian football over the last two decades has been a matter of alternating between the first and second top leagues. The second half of the first decade saw the decline and relegation of the divisions. Their comeback came in the 2012/13 season when they once again fought their way into Serie A. However, they are usually in the second half at the tail end of the league table.
