The usual nicknames for one of Edinburgh's clubs are Hibs, or The Hibees or The Cabbage. The original anthem is Glory, Glory to the Hibees, written by a Scottish comedian. Long-time fans include Scottish singing duo The Proclaimers, who were heavily involved in the "Hands off Hibs" campaign to save the club in 1990. The song from their album Sunshine on Leith then became the current anthem and is traditionally played before big games at the home stadium.
The club's home stadium is Easter Road with a capacity of 20,421, making it the fifth largest football stadium in Scotland. The club's fans nickname it "The Holy Ground" or also "The Leith San Siro". International matches are also sometimes played here. The club colours of Hibernian are green and white. The traditional rival is of course the other club from Edinburgh, namely Heart of Midlothian.
The club was founded in 1875, a year later than its biggest rival. The club was founded by members of the Irish community from Cowgate in Edinburgh. Its name is derived from Hibernia, the Roman name for Ireland.
The club's first successes came in 1902 when it won the Scottish Cup (it has 3 in total, as well as winning the Scottish League Cup) and then a year later it scored in Scotland's top competition for the first time. Overall, he won the top competition in both seasons:
After the first victory there was a long pause, when the club did not perform well. This brought a relegation in 1931. However, two years later they managed to come back. The club's greatest successes came after the end of World War II, between 1939 and 1959.
In those years, the club had five forwards known as "The Famous Fife". Gordon Smith, Bobby Johnstone, Lawrie Reilly, Eddie Turnbull and Willie Ormond. Their tenure was described as "the best Scottish football has ever seen".
