The Turkish football club has Yeşil Şimşekler (Green Lightning) as its nickname. The club colours are green and black. The home jerseys are green with black vertical stripes and black shorts. The club was founded in 1966 and is based in the city of İzmit, which can be found 100 kilometres east of İstanbul.
The club enjoys quite a wide support as it has fans all over Turkey. The club played at the highest level of Turkish football between 1980 and 1988 and then between 1992 and 2003. Among the club's greatest achievements can be ranked the 4th position in the first league table within the 1992/93 season. They also won the Turkish Cup twice, in 1997 and 2002.
