The club was founded as Macclesfield FC back in 1874, in the town of Macclesfield in the metropolitan county of Cheshire. It has had its current name with the Town moniker since 1966.

The club's achievements include winning the FA Trophy twice, in the 1969/70 and 1995/96 seasons. They have also dominated the regional Cheshire Senior Cup a total of 21 times.
