The nickname of this football club is La Paillade. The club colours are orange and blue. Their home stadium is the Stade de la Mosson, which currently has a capacity of 32 900 seats. It was radically renovated in 1998, whereas before that its capacity was less than half that, only 16,000 seats.
The club has a local rivalry with Nîmes Olympique, which began in the 1980s when the latter had regional supremacy. This has, of course, evolved according to how the clubs have fared in their games against each other. Indeed, they have not always operated together at the same league level. In recent years, the rivalry has rather waned.
Although the club was originally founded in 1919, its current form resulted from a merger in 1974. The club has been through many mergers in its history. With this, the name for the club has also changed. It has borne its current name, which reads Montpellier Hérault Sport Club throughout, since 1989. The club is one of the founding members of Ligue 1 and one of the few that are still active in Ligue 1 today.
Despite its long tenure in Ligue 1, it only became champion in the 2011/12 season. It is both his first and last championship so far. In addition to this, however, he also has cup successes, having dominated the French Cup in the 1928/29 and 1989/90 seasons. In the 1930/31 and 1993/94 seasons, he also reached the final. In 1992, he won the French Cup and was still in the final in 1994 and 2011. He also managed success on European soil, winning the Intertoto Cup in 1999.
