Motherwell FC play at Fir Park Stadium, which has a capacity of 13,677. It has been the home stadium since 1895, until then it was played at Danziel Park. The club colours were originally blue, but since 1913 the colours have been claret and amber.
The football club was founded in 1886 and, as with many other clubs, this was through the merger of two teams. Glencairn FC and Alpha FC. The motivation was to create a club that could represent the town as a whole at a higher level of football. In the first match, the new club defeated their rivals Hamilton Academical 3-2.
The early years of the club were somewhat chaotic, but as time passed, more successful years came. These were brought about in the 1920s and 1930s by manager John Hunter. In the 1919/20 season the club finished 3rd in the top flight. Despite the situation in the 1924/25 season when the club avoided relegation, 7 more successful years followed when they finished in the top three places. These successes culminated in the 1931/32 season when the club became league champions. Other achievements include the following victories:
The team also enjoyed success at European level, with a successful tour of Spain in the summer of 1927. They won six of their eight matches, drew once and were beaten only once. It won 3-1 against the big club Real Madrid and drew 2-2 with another famous club, Barcelona.
Of course there were lean periods, the first relegation in the club's history came in the 1952/53 season, but it was only for one year. More recently, Motherwell finished 2nd in the top domestic competition in the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons, both times behind Celtic.
