They are known as the Green and White Army or Nom Iron. From 1882 to 1920, the whole of Ireland was represented nationally by a single group, namely the Irish Football Team, organised by the Irish Football Association (IFA). In 1921, the jurisdiction of the IFA was reduced to Northern Ireland following the secession of clubs in the fledgling Irish Free State, although the team remained the national team for the whole of Ireland until 1950 and used the name Ireland until 1970. Today, the situation is that the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) organises a separate national football team for the Republic of Ireland and the Northern Ireland national football team represents only Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland has competed internationally in three FIFA World Cups and reached the quarter-finals in the 1958 and 1982 tournaments. It has earned the distinction of being the smallest nation to qualify for the final rounds of a World Cup from its first appearance in 1958 to 2006. This distinction is there because Trinidad and Tobago qualified for the 2006 World Cup. Northern Ireland made its first appearance at the European Championships in 2016.
