The jerseys of the Polish national football team are red and white, hence their nickname, the Red and Whites. Dressed in their national colours, the Poles played their first international match in 1921. The team is managed by the Polish Football Association, which is the governing body of Polish football. Poland have played in eight World Cups in competitions organised by FIFA, where they made their first appearance in 1938, eventually being knocked out by Brazil.
With regard to the achievements of Polish football, the bronze medals are from 1974 in Germany and 1982 in Spain. It is also considered the golden period of Polish football, with Poland even winning a gold medal in 1972, at the Munich Summer Olympics. They also have two silver medals from the Olympics, from Montreal in 1976 and Barcelona in 1992. At the European Championships organised by UEFA, Poland's best result is a quarter-final appearance in the 2016 tournament, having been knocked out by Portugal. Overall, they have competed in three European Championships with their debut in 2008. They co-hosted the 2012 European Championships, along with Ukraine.
