The Spanish team Real Club Deportivo Mallorca, from the port city of Palma, has been playing football since 1916. Interestingly, it is the oldest football team in the Balearic Islands. In its more than a century of existence, it has also won a number of successes, the biggest being the 2003 Copa del Rey and before that the 1998 Spanish Super Cup triumph.
In 1999, the club went on to reach the final of the Cup Winners' Cup. Their opponent in this match was the famous Lazio Rome, which was beyond the strength of the RCD Mallorca players and the match eventually ended 2-1 to the Romans. Earlier in the semi-final Mallorca managed to beat Chelsea from London.
RCD Mallorca played their first match against FC Barcelona, when they got eight goals and failed to score any. This was then still played under the name Junta Directiva del Alfonso XIII FBC, which was chosen in honour of the then king. In 1931, the name was changed to Club Deportivo Mallorca and eighteen years later, Real was added to the beginning of the name to again emphasise the affection for the King.
