The name Reggina 1914 suggests that the history of this football team dates back to 1914. At that time it was called Unione Sportiva Reggio Calabria. The club has changed its name several times during its century-long existence. Home matches are played at the Stadio Oreste Granillo with a possible capacity of about 27.5 thousand spectators.
Reggina is one of the teams involved in the Calciopoli corruption scandal in 2006, which resulted in them being penalized 15 points for the next season. But unlike some of the other teams implicated, they were not relegated from the first league. However, they were relegated from that league in 2009 anyway and that wasn't the end of it, as they were relegated to the fourth league over the years, from which they subsequently returned to the third league in 2016.
