Of course, they run onto the field wearing their national colours, dubbing them the tricolour. Interestingly, Romania, with its national football team, is one of only four European countries to have participated in the first ever World Cup in 1930. Apart from Romania, the other countries were Belgium, France and the former Yugoslavia. Since then, Romania has qualified in 1934, 1938, 1970, 1990, 1994 and 1998.
Romania's national football team had their finest hour in 1994, led by their former midfield leader named Gheorghe Haghi, when the quarter-finals were reached. They were stopped by the Swedes then, and only after a penalty shootout. Before that, they beat Argentina. If we look from the World Cup to the European Championships, the Romanians had their greatest success there in 2000, when they reached the quarter-finals from a group with Germany, Portugal and England. They were also among the last eight teams historically in 1960 and 1972 and qualified for the tournament in 1984, 1996, 2008 and 2016.
