Russian national football team is one of those national teams that have ever won a medal at a major event. It happened at the European Championships in 2008. Of course, as the Soviet Union they could also enjoy the title, that happened in 1960 and after that they were still second three times. In the Soviet era they were also the closest to a World Championship medal, as they came fourth in 1966. They also played the Confederations Cup once in 2017, but even the home environment didn't help them to advance out of the group.
