The nicknames of the club are I Turchini, Les Bleus (the blue ones) and I Lioni di Furiani (the lions of Furiani). Blue is the club's dominant colour, with white and black details also appearing on the jerseys. At home, this Corsican club plays at the Stade Armand-Cesari, which is also known as the Stade de Furiani. Its capacity is 33 000 fans.
Among Corsicans, the club has a large percentage of fans. It is an important part and symbol of Corsican national pride and also of the struggle for the independence of the island of Corsica. Fans thus feel a rivalry with most mainland clubs. The biggest, however, is with the club Nice, with whom they play the Derby de la Mediterranée. There is also a rivalry with the Parisian club PSG, given the different political views of Parisians and islanders. Conversely, there is local rivalry with neighbouring islanders AC Ajaccio and, to a lesser extent, Gazélec Ajaccio, with whom they compete for dominance on the island.
The club from the island of Corsica was founded in 1905 as Sporting Club di Bastia, which is its full name. It was founded by Swiss Hans Ruesch, who taught German at a high school in the town of Bastia. The club began its professional career in the second division in 1968. After a difficult first few seasons, the club made it to the French Cup final in 1972, where it was defeated by Olympique de Marseille. It reached the Cup Winners' Cup qualifiers, where it again lost, this time to the phenomenal Atlético Madrid.
The French Cup was finally won, in 1981. They also appeared once more in the final, in 2002. Bastia was also in the final of the French Football Cup in 1995 and 2015. In European cups, they appeared in the final of the UEFA Cup, the current Europa League, in 1978. However, they won the Intertoto Cup, in 1997.
In terms of modern league appearances, the club has straddled the line between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, having been relegated several times and coming back again.
