The original Italian name is SSC Napoli, while the club nicknames are Gli Azzurri (the blues) or I Partenopei. Their club colour is of course blue, which is represented on their jerseys in combination with white shorts. The club anthem is "O surdato nnammurato". They play their home games at the Stadio San Paulo, which has a newly reduced capacity of 55,000 seats. Previously the capacity was 60,240 and even before that it was 109,824 seats. The stadium was built after the Second World War and the gradual renovations and capacity reduction are obviously aimed at improving safety standards.
This is a club that has the fourth highest support in the league. It is supported by 13% of all Italian football fans. It has a long-standing rivalry with AS Roma, and the joint matches are known as the Derby del Sole. There is another rivalry with Juventus and there is also a derby played with the Sicilian club Palermo called Derby delle Due Sicilie.
The club was founded in 1926 in the city of Naples, then as Associazione Calcio Napoli. It was founded by former industrialist Giorgio Ascarelli. It has had its current name since 1964. Among the club's most successful periods are those under owner Corrado Ferlaino, who in 1984 bought Argentine footballer Diego Maradona from Barcelona with whom he won a string of victories until 1991.
Among the club's least successful periods, we can point to the period after the 2003/04 season, when the club went into decline. In 2004 it was re-established under the Napoli Soccer banner and its beginnings were in the 3rd league. From the 2006/07 season, however, it started using the original name SSC Napoli again.
The club has won the top competition Serie A a total of 2 times. This was in the 1986/87 and 1989/90 seasons. In recent years, the club has been at the top of Serie A. In addition, it has five Italian Cup triumphs, which it won most recently in the 2013/14 season. It has also won the Italian Super Cup twice, in 1990 and 2014. It also scored in the UEFA Cup, the current Europa League, in the 1988/89 season.
