The club's nicknames are Die Werderaner and Die Grün-Weißen. The club colours are green and white, which are both on the jerseys and in the emblem. The club's anthem is "Lebenslang Grün-Weiß" and after every goal, "I'm Gonna Be" by Scottish duo The Proclaimers is played in the home stadium. They are at home, by the way, in a sanctuary called Weser-Stadion, which has a capacity of 42,100 people for league matches. Among other things, it hosts concerts.
There's a long-standing rivalry with Hamburger SV, another major club in northern Germany. Their mutual matches are referred to as Nordderby. There is a recent but intense hatred of Schalke after the Gelsenkirchen club poached some of their best players and management people. There are also several radical fan groups associated with the club.
The club was founded in 1899, under the former name Fußballverein Werder von 1899. It has held its current name since 1946. The club is based in the city of Bremen. The sports club has other activities besides football, such as handball, athletics and table tennis.
It has been active in the Bundesliga since its beginnings, i.e. since the 1963/64 season, as it was one of the founding members. Although he initially dominated the league and won his first title the following season, things stopped going well later on. Overall, however, the club has been successful in League One, with a complete record of four titles. The last one was in 2004. The team has been in the Bundesliga since 1981/82.
It has also scored points in the cups, having won the DFB-Pokal 6 times, most recently in the 2008/09 season. He also reached the UEFA Europa League final in the same season. On European soil, he went on to win the Intertoto Cup in 1998 and the Cup Winners' Cup in the 1991/92 season.
