US national football team first participated in the World Cup in 1930 and achieved its best result, which was third place. They had trouble qualifying in the second half of the 20th century and have participated fairly regularly since 1990, and when they have played, they have usually advanced out of the group.
The United States continue to play in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which they have won six times. At the better known Copa América, their best finish is fourth place, which they achieved in 1995 and 2016. The Confederations Cup was best for the USA in 2009, when they finished second, improving on their previous two bronze medals.
