The Tuscany club has a tradition dating back to 1920 and has changed its name several times throughout its history. From the original Empoli FBC it gradually became ASF Empoli, Dopolavoro Empolese to today's Empoli FC. The Azzurri, as the team playing its home games at Stadio Carlo Castellani (capacity of more than 16,000 spectators) is also nicknamed, even played in the UEFA Cup in 2007. However, the vast majority of their time was spent in Italy's third highest competition. They have been more successful in recent seasons, but they are still more of a provincial club in the Italian scale, on the border between Serie A and Serie B.
More about Empoli FCThe club's Italian name is Genoa CFC, and it has nicknames such as I Rossoblu (the red and blue), Il Grifone and Il Vecchio Balordo (the old fools). The club colours are red and blue, as can be seen in one of the nicknames. At home they play at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, which is also known as Marassi after the location where it is situated. Its capacity is 36,600 seats.
