However, the name change to its current status occurred the following year. Their home stadium, Prenton Park, boasts a capacity of over 16,000 spectators. The club was founded in 1889 in the south-west London borough of Merton. For a long time it played in the lower competitions, but after professionalisation it rose to the highest rungs of English football in 1985 and also managed to win the English Cup, in 1888. They beat then big club Liverpool 1-0.
